Big Buck Photo Contest Is Back!

Ellen Pitts - Bullock CoDeer season is in full swing and so is our annual Big Buck Photo Contest. Send us your photo of your legally taken deer from one of the 23 Alabama Black Belt counties during the 2016-17 season and you may win our big prize – a $100 Bass Pro Shops gift card.

Entries are accepted only via email to photocontest@albbaa.org. The photos will be uploaded to our Facebook page and the winner will be determined by the number of “likes” it receives. With your entry, please include the name of the hunter and the county where the buck was taken. Winners of the contest from the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons are not eligible. Deadline for entry is Feb. 17, 2017.

Montevallo Students Visit Black Belt

Members of the University of Montevallo President’s Outdoor Scholars Program paid a visit to Gusto, a private quail preserve where they observed and were instructed on timber species, plant composition, the importance of prescribed burning and the overall integration of habitat improvement practices to support quail and other wildlife.

The students also took part in feeding cattle on the property as they learned more about the proper care of livestock. Farm-to-table culinary practices were demonstrated with wild game preparation and cooking methods, followed by lunch that featured stuffed quail. Students also had access to Gusto’s fishing lakes.

The Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association and the University of Montevallo’s Outdoor Scholars have a perfect partnership of real-world experiences and academics. The ALBBAA strongly encourages you to think about the young people in your life who are nearing college age, love the outdoors and are researching scholarship opportunities. Visit outdoorscholars.montevallo.edu for more information.

Book a Black Belt Lodge as a Christmas Gift

It may be too late to lock in a great weekend hunting trip over the Christmas holidays, but reserving a weekend for later would be an awesome gift!

The ALBBAA has partnerships with 54 great lodges that offer a wide range of outdoors opportunities. We have friends from Aliceville to Pine Apple to Notasulga to Union Springs who provide experiences that will last in your memory for a lifetime. Besides deer hunts, many lodges provide duck hunting opportunities, quail hunts, bass fishing and bird-watching outings.

Visit our website and peruse the long list. You’re sure to find a spot that speaks to you and would be an amazing gift. Find the lodge list here.

If a lodge weekend isn’t right up your alley, remember you can create a great Christmas memory with a trip to some of the public lands available in the Black Belt for a winter-break hunt or camping trip. Check out the Wildlife Management Areas and other public lands at this link.

Thanks For Your Vote on Amendment 2

Amendment 2 passed overwhelmingly in our general election with almost 80 percent of the vote, assuring that the Alabama State Parks System’s budget will not be raided by the Legislature to fill General Fund spending gaps. Thank you for your vote! This is a great thing that will help our parks in budgeting for the future, planning and making renovations and working on seriously needed maintenance projects.

Remember to visit our parks, too! You can find out more about all of them here.
